Pixar Animation boss John Lasseter treated attendees at Tuesday's Cinema Con in Las Vegas to the first 30 minutes of the studio's upcoming movie Brave. While we're not allowed to review the footage per se, we can give you some of the highlights of our reactions to the footage, which was fully completed.
Brave is set in the Scottish Highlands in the Middle Ages and follows Merida (voiced as an adult by Boardwalk Empire's Kelly Macdonald). She is, like so many of her Disney female counterparts, a princess. The movie opens with Merida as a child receiving a bow for her birthday from her father, King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly). Merida 's birthday is interrupted by a vicious bear, whom her father and his men then attack.
We skip ahead to Merida in her late teens. She now has triplet little brothers, cute mischief-makers with hair as fiery red as hers. Merida 's well-intentioned, but overbearing mom Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson) has made it her mission in life to train Merida to be the perfect princess. She's somewhere between a stage-mother and a drill instructor about it.
