There are a lot of actors who have made the move into politics after gaining a little bit of reputation in the field of films. There are dozens who have done that, but only a few really prominent actors have made a dent in the field of politics. Here is a list of some of the most popular Bollywood stars and their tryst with politics.
.Amitabh Bachchan: It would certainly be impossible for a man as popular as him to stay away from politics. He joined politics in 1984, supporting Rajiv Gandhi, who was a family friend. He stood for elections in Allahabad and beat H.N Bahuguna, the former CM of UP by a large, record margin. She got elected as a Rajya Sabha member, representing the Samajwadi Party, that both her and her husband support. However, there were a few reports of some scuffles between Amar Singh and Jaya, especially after Jaya supporter other members over Amar Singh.
.Hema Malini: Hema Malini joined politics with Dharmendra, her husband. She has campaigned for her friends in politics now and then, such as the popular actor Vinod Khanna. She joined politics officially in 2004, when she became a part of the BJP. She has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since tha period as well. In fact, Hema Malini leads an active political life. She was even made the General Secretary of the BJP in 2010.
.Govinda: Govinda’s entry into politics was speculated upon by a lot of people. He did have mass support and he made it into the Lok Sabha as the member of the Congress Party, elected through Mumbai. However, his constituency did not benefit enough as a result of his tenure or representation. He was cast in further negative light because of the fact that he made a lot of provocative comments on public platforms. Govinda, as of now, has quit politics in favour of pursuing a film career.
.Jayaprada: Jayaprada entered politics with the introduction of N.T. Rama Rao, in south India. She was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh in 1996. She also joined the Samajwadi Party and contested the elections under the party banner in 2004. However, she was expelled from the SP as she was suspected of anti- party activities.
.Shatrughan Sinha: When Shatrughan Sinha ran for elections for the first time, he was running against another celebrity, Shekhar Suman. Bihar elected Sinha as their representative. In the 13th Lok Sabha, he held the portfolios of Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Shipping. The former cabinet minister is now an active member of the Bhartiya Janata Party.
.Sanjay Dutt:Sanjay Dutt’s nomination certainly caused a lot of media and political speculation. He contested elections as the candidate of the Samajwadi Party in Lucknow. A lot of hue and cry was raised about Dutt’s nomination, keeping his criminal background in mind. However, Sanjay decided to quit politics and has decided to just stick to the acting industry, saying that he prefers the latter’s atmosphere more.
